Muskrat Love – The Running Gag from the Hold Music

Married with Children muskrat love hold music

I never consciously noticed the song title before. And as a non-native English speaker, I probably would have missed it again if I hadn’t looked into it a while ago.

In “Godfather” (Season 5, Episode 13 | February 3, 1991), Al calls the city to complain about the pothole in front of his driveway and a broken streetlight. Frustrated, he says he’s been listening to “Muskrat Love” on hold for three hours.
More than three years earlier, in “For Whom the Bell Tolls” (Season 2, Episode 7 | October 25, 1987), Al already mentions the same song. This time he’s arguing with the phone company over a call to Vancouver that nobody in the family made, and complains that he’s been stuck on hold for 45 minutes listening to the Muzak version of “Muskrat Love.”

These are the kinds of little details you really only catch in the original version. And honestly, I wouldn’t be surprised if some of you have spotted the song referenced somewhere else in the series.

If you’ve never heard the original song, you can listen to it here.

And one more thing…
On June 18, D-Money started a discussion in the Grandmaster B section called “Help Us Create the Next Bundy Club Song.” I only discovered it a few days ago, and I think it’s a fantastic idea.
Let’s join the discussion there and throw some ideas together. I’d love to see what this community comes up with!

Whoa Bundy

How about “Lonely Boy” by Paul Anka? There was a reference to Bud with this song in one episode.
