Season 6 Episode 6: Buck Has a Belly Ache

Buck has lost his appetite, and the household’s response is total: Al, Kelly and Bud devote themselves to the dog, and Peggy, pregnant, and accustomed to being the centre of attention, finds herself ignored. She leaves and moves back in with the Wankers, which is the first time the series let her actually walk out rather than threaten to.

The episode is a good demonstration of how the pregnancy storyline altered the household’s balance. Peggy had spent five seasons as the one person in the house nobody could overlook, and the baby arc gave her a status that the dog is able to displace in a single episode. Her departure is played as a genuine grievance rather than a bluff, and the family’s failure to notice she has gone for some time is the joke.

Jefferson’s half of the half-hour has him developing a sympathy pregnancy, which Marcy enjoys considerably more than he does, one of the first signs of how the series intended to use the character now that he had been promoted to the main cast.

This is the last episode to show Peggy pregnant, and the circumstances behind that are worth recording. Katey Sagal was pregnant in life, and shortly after this episode was filmed she suffered a miscarriage. She was absent from the following four episodes while she recovered, and the series resolved the storyline by revealing the entire pregnancy to have been Al’s dream. Joey Lauren Adams appears as Cousin Effie, her second of three roles on the show.

Nobody Notices Peg Is Gone

Buck goes off his food and turns listless, and Al and the kids drop everything to nurse the dog. Jefferson, meanwhile, develops a sympathetic pregnancy, which infuriates the actually pregnant Peggy, since Al has never shown a symptom in his life.

Feeling thoroughly outranked by a dog, Peg leaves for a week with her relatives in Wanker County. She comes home to find that nobody in the house noticed she had gone. It is the bleakest ending the show had attempted to that point and it is played entirely straight.

Joey Lauren Adams plays Cousin Effie here, one of three Married with Children appearances. The others are Janey in The Wedding Show and Mona Mullins in Top of the Heap.

Famous Quotes

  • Kelly: “What’s she carrying in there? A chain-smoking otter?” Kelly, on her mother’s pregnancy.
  • Bud: “Here’s your ice cream, Mom: Tabaki and clam.” Peggy: “That’s the missing ingredient!” Peg’s cravings, catered to.
  • Al: “I was talking about the dog, Brunhilda.” Al, clarifying who he was worried about.
  • Peg: “It’s me, you milk dud!” Peg, home from a week away, introducing herself.

Notes

  • This is the last episode in which Peggy is shown pregnant. Katey Sagal miscarried shortly after filming and was absent from the next four episodes while she recovered. The pregnancy was written out at the end of Al Bundy, Shoe Dick.
  • Al sarcastically calls the family “Harriet, Ricky, David,” after The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet.
  • Peggy orders a “John Madden with the Works” from Ox Kebob.
  • Kelly cites Dr. Spock on childcare.
