Season 10 Episode 17: The Agony and the Extra C

The episode opens in a hospital room with Jefferson in a bed and Bud and Kelly asking how he got there, which means the half-hour is told as a flashback, an unusual structure for this series, and one that lets the story build toward a single visual punchline. It begins on the D’Arcys’ wedding anniversary, with NO MA’AM convened in the Bundy kitchen on what Al describes as the day a married man most needs his friends. Officer Dan is posted at the window conducting surveillance on Marcy, referred to throughout as Codename: KFC.

The rescue mission relocates to the Jiggly Room for Foreign Exchange Night, and it is there that Jefferson realises he has not bought his wife a present. The huddle that follows, NO MA’AM and several dancers gathered around Al, workshopping anniversary gift ideas, is the episode’s best scene, and Ike supplies its mission statement when asked what the group does for a brother in need: try to help him out and in so doing make things worse. Bob Rooney offers lingerie he is already carrying. Al runs through his own anniversary record, which is built around paper bags.

The idea they settle on is a tattoo of Marcy’s name, suggested by a dancer who had done the same for a boyfriend, and the execution is where the title comes in. One extra letter goes on, and the consequences are what put Jefferson in the hospital bed the episode opened in. Katey Sagal appears briefly in a pre-recorded insert, with Peg now in Paris and still nominally looking for her father, and Traci Bingham, then on Baywatch, turns up as the lap dancer.

Foreign Exchange Night at the Jiggly Room

The flashback framing is the episode’s smartest decision. The audience knows from the first scene that this ends with Jefferson in a hospital bed, so every step of the plan carries an implied consequence, and the script can take its time getting there. It also lets the half-hour open on its biggest question and withhold the answer, which is not something this series normally bothered to do.

The kitchen surveillance scene is a good distillation of what NO MA’AM had become by season ten. The organisation exists, has a mission, assigns code names, and posts a lookout, and the operation it has mobilised for is extracting one man from his own anniversary. Officer Dan switching off a police dispatch about the mayor being taken hostage in order to get to the nudie bar is the single most efficient joke about the character the show ever wrote.

Ike’s line about helping a brother and making things worse is effectively the thesis of every NO MA’AM storyline, and the episode has him say it out loud before proving it. The gift brainstorm produces the tattoo, the tattoo produces the extra C, and the extra C produces the hospital. There is a tidiness to the chain of causation that the show’s looser episodes often lacked.

Famous Quotes

  • Al: “We are here on an important mission: To save our brother D’Arcy from the fire-breathing lip-less beak of his wife on the day when all married men need their friends the most, their wedding anniversary.”
  • Al: “Brother Dan, has code name ‘KFC’ flown the coop yet?” / Officer Dan: “No, but she’s headed for the living room.”
  • Jefferson: “Hey, why aren’t you guys at work?” / Al, Griff, Bob Rooney, Ike: “We’re sick!” / Officer Dan: “Except for me. I’m working.” Then he switches off a dispatch about the mayor being taken hostage: “Blah, blah, blah! Come on! Let’s go to the nudie bar!”
  • Al: “When one of us is in need, what do we do?” / Ike: “Try to help him out and in so doing we make things worse.”
  • Bob Rooney: “Lingerie is always nice.” / Griff: “This is for Jefferson’s wife?” / Bob Rooney: “Ah, yeah.” And the bra goes back where it came from.
  • Al: “Well, it depends on the year. The first year is paper, so I put a big bag over her head. I can’t wait for the plastic anniversary.”

Notes

  • Katey Sagal appears only in a brief pre-recorded insert, with Peggy shown in Paris still supposedly searching for Ephraim.
  • Traci Bingham, who plays the lap dancer, was then on Baywatch, a series that also employed former Married… with Children guests Pamela Anderson, Nicole Eggert and Donna D’Errico.
  • Marcy sings Donna Summer’s “Hot Stuff” while setting up the anniversary dinner.
  • Officer Dan’s drunken “Hey, I’m a village person” on the Jiggly Room stage references the Village People’s police officer.
  • Goof: Griff describes Chihuahua as Chicago’s sister city in Mexico. Chicago’s actual Mexican sister city is Mexico City, some 900 miles further south.
  • Goof: Peggy’s Paris taxi is marked “CHEQUER,” a nod to the American Checker Cab company, which never operated outside the United States; a Paris cab would read “Taxi Parisien.”
