Mark your calendars: The 3rd Bundy Breakdown Zoom Watch Party is happening Thursday, May 14th at 6PM PT. We’ve got the Unsung Heroes of NO MA’AM on Married with Children joining us, Griff, Bob Rooney & Ike!
In the later seasons of the iconic sitcom Married with Children, the show found new life through Al Bundy’s ragtag group of friends fighting back against what they saw as the rising tide of women’s liberation. That group was NO MA’AM (National Organization of Men Against Amazonian Masterhood), and two of its most reliable and hilarious members were Griff and Bob Rooney. These characters brought steady laughs, memorable one-liners, and a perfect blend of loyalty and incompetence that fans still quote today.
If you grew up watching reruns or discovered the show later on streaming, you know how special these supporting players were. They were not just background guys. They helped turn Al’s shoe store complaints and bar rants into full-blown adventures. In this post, we will dive deep into who Griff and Bob Rooney were, their backstories both on the show and in real life, the episodes where they teamed up, and the solo outings that made each one shine. Whether you are a die-hard fan or just curious about the NO MA’AM crew, this one is for you.

Who is Griff? Griff, played by the talented Harold Sylvester, is Al Bundy’s long-suffering coworker at Gary’s Shoes. He joined the cast in season 9 and quickly became one of Al’s closest confidants. On the show, Griff is a divorced man who lost everything in his marriage. His ex-wife took the house, the car, and even his prized Pam Grier movie collection. This leaves him cynical about women but still game for whatever ridiculous plan Al cooks up.
Harold Sylvester was born on February 10, 1949, in New Orleans, Louisiana. He attended St. Augustine High School and became a standout basketball player. He made history as the first African American student to receive an athletic scholarship to Tulane University. There he studied psychology before switching to theater and graduating in 1972. His athletic background and natural charm helped him land roles that mixed comedy with dramatic weight.
Before Married with Children, Sylvester built a solid career in film and television. He appeared in classics like An Officer and a Gentleman (1982), Uncommon Valor (1983), Innerspace (1987), and Corrina, Corrina (1994). On TV he had roles in A Different World (as Dwayne Wayne’s father), The Army Show, Shaky Ground, and guest spots on everything from Hill Street Blues to NYPD Blue. His tall stature (around 6 foot 5) and calm delivery made him the perfect foil for Ed O’Neill’s explosive Al Bundy. Griff often played the voice of slight reason in the group, only to get dragged into the chaos anyway.
Who is Bob Rooney? Bob Rooney, portrayed by E.E. Bell (full name Edward Earle Bell), is one of Al’s old Polk High football teammates. He works as a butcher, is married to Louise (one of Peggy’s friends), and proudly serves as the treasurer of NO MA’AM. Fans love how everyone, including his own wife, always calls him by his full name “Bob Rooney.” It became a running gag that added to his everyman charm.
E.E. Bell was born on December 27, 1955. He has appeared in a wide range of projects, including films like Air Force One (1997), Water for Elephants (2011), Hail, Caesar! (2016), and Don’t Tell Mom the Babysitter’s Dead (1991). On television he has racked up dozens of credits, including guest spots on How I Met Your Mother, The West Wing, and The Bold and the Beautiful. Outside acting, Bell is a musician who plays tenor banjo and sings lead vocals in the Irish band The Whooligans.
On the show, Bob Rooney is the dependable guy who shows up with snacks, collects the dues, and never questions Al’s leadership for long. His portly build and enthusiastic “Yeah, Al!” attitude made him the perfect group member for every dumb scheme.
Who is Ike? Ike, portrayed by Tom McCleister, is a tall, quiet, and loyal member of Al Bundy’s NO MA’AM crew. He is a charter member of the group and officially serves as the Sergeant at Arms, which basically means he’s the guy who escorts unwanted visitors (usually women) out of the meetings. Ike is a man of few words, but when he does speak, it’s often something odd – like his unshakable belief that Elvis Presley is still alive.
Tom McCleister was born on May 26, 1949. He is best known to Married with Children fans for his recurring role as Ike throughout seasons 9, 10, and 11. Before and after the show, he built a solid career as a character actor with appearances in major films like Midnight Run (1988), Twins (1988) alongside Arnold Schwarzenegger and Danny DeVito, Envy (2004), and Crazy in Alabama. He has also had guest roles on television shows including Cold Case, Mercy Street, Banshee, and even played the alien Kolos in the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode “Q-Less.”
On the show, Ike is the strong, silent type of the NO MA’AM gang. While Bob Rooney is the loud treasurer and Griff is the sarcastic shoe-store buddy, Ike is the dependable muscle who shows up, stands there looking imposing, and occasionally drops a deadpan line that perfectly fits the moment. His dead-serious belief that Elvis is still alive became one of his most memorable running gags.

Episodes They Appeared In
These are the standout episodes where Griff and Bob Rooney share screen time and fuel the NO MA’AM antics:
- Season 9, Episode 11: A Man for No Seasons. Griff officially joins NO MA’AM. The guys form their own baseball league during the real-life MLB strike. Lots of hilarious initiation rituals and group bonding.
- Season 9, Episode 12: I Want My Psycho Dad Part 1 and Episode 13: Part 2. The whole crew hits the road to protest and save their favorite trashy TV show. Classic road-trip chaos with both characters heavily involved.
- Season 9, Episode 14: The Naked and the Dead, but Mostly the Naked. The men take their wives to the Jiggly Room on A-Cup Night. This is the episode with the famous “mountain I gotta climb” line about Rocki Mountains. Pure NO MA’AM gold.
- Season 9, Episode 22: And Bingo Was Her Game-O. While Peggy wins big at bingo, the guys hang out at the bar plotting and complaining as usual.
- Season 10, Episode 7: Flight of the Bumblebee. The gang watches wrestling and subjects Bud to a painful initiation. Griff and Bob Rooney are right in the middle of the fun.
- Season 10, Episode 15: The Hood, the Bud and the Kelly Part 2. Griff takes a memorable fall off the roof during one of their schemes. Bob Rooney is there for the group reaction.
- Season 10, Episode 26: The Joke’s on Al. A big prank episode focused on Griff that spirals out of control. One of the funniest group outings.
These joint appearances capture the heart of what made NO MA’AM work: dumb ideas, male bonding, and zero success.
Griff’s Other Episodes
Griff had plenty of screen time without Bob Rooney, mostly centered on the shoe store or personal storylines. Here are some key ones:
- Season 9, Episode 4: Naughty but Niece. Griff makes an early appearance dealing with family chaos at the shoe store.
- Season 9, Episode 5: Business Sucks (Part 1). Al and Griff face major troubles at Gary’s Shoes.
- Season 9, Episode 6: Business Still Sucks (Part 2). The shoe store drama continues with Griff heavily involved.
- Season 9, Episode 16: Get the Dodge Outta Hell. Al and Griff deal with car-related antics.
- Season 9, Episode 17: Something Larry This Way Comes. Griff helps with Kelly’s acting coach storyline.
- Season 9, Episode 20: User Friendly. Griff joins Al in trying to figure out a mysterious kitchen switch.
- Season 9, Episode 21: Pump Fiction. Griff appears in the Pulp Fiction parody involving Al and Kelly’s film project.
- Season 9, Episode 23: Shoeless Al. Shoe store focus with Griff and Al.
- Season 10, Episode 4: Reverend Al. The group starts their own church (Griff is key).
- Season 10, Episode 5: How Bleen Was My Kelly. Griff gets involved in Kelly-related antics.
- Season 10, Episode 13: I Can’t Believe It’s Butter. Griff participates in group schemes.
- Season 11, Episode 1: Twisted. Griff appears in early season 11 stories.
- Season 11, Episode 24: Chicago Shoe Exchange. Al and Griff go overboard trading shoes for mall merchandise in one of the final episodes.
Griff’s solo moments often highlighted his bad luck with women and his loyalty to Al, making him feel like a true best friend by the end of the series.
Bob Rooney’s Other Episodes
Bob Rooney actually debuted earlier and stuck around longer. Here are notable episodes beyond the joint ones:
- Season 8, Episode 9: No Ma’am. Bob Rooney debuts as the group forms NO MA’AM after the women take over bowling and the Jiggly Room.
- Season 9, Episode 7: Dud Bowl. Football nostalgia episode with Bob Rooney.
- Season 9, Episode 20: User Friendly. Bob Rooney gets trapped in the wall during the kitchen switch chaos.
- Season 9, Episode 21: Pump Fiction. Bob appears in the parody storyline.
- Season 10, Episode 5: How Bleen Was My Kelly. Bob Rooney joins the group antics.
- Season 10, Episode 13: I Can’t Believe It’s Butter. Another group episode featuring Bob.
- Season 10, Episode 26 or later: Various NO MA’AM schemes where he serves as treasurer.
- Later appearances extend into season 11, including episodes like Live Nude Peg.
His presence added continuity from the early NO MA’AM days through the final seasons.
Why These Characters Matter
Griff and Bob Rooney were never the main stars, but they elevated the later seasons. Married with Children ran for 11 seasons from 1987 to 1997, and by season 8 the core family dynamics needed fresh energy. NO MA’AM provided that. These two actors brought real chemistry and commitment to roles that could have been throwaway. Fans still rewatch their scenes for the quotable lines and the sense of camaraderie that felt authentic.
The show itself became a cultural touchstone for blue-collar humor and pushing boundaries on network TV. Griff and Bob Rooney helped keep that spirit alive when ratings and creative energy fluctuated. Their real-life careers show they were hardworking character actors who made the most of every opportunity.
If you have not revisited these episodes lately, now is the perfect time. The chemistry between Harold Sylvester and E.E. Bell, combined with Ed O’Neill and the rest of the cast, delivers laughs that still hold up.
