Married with Children: 10 Years on Set and Why the Bundy Cast Is Still Best Friends Today

Fans always want to know if the cast actually got along after 10 years on the same soundstage. The short answer: yeah, mostly. The long answer involves Ed O’Neill, a telephone, and my wife trying to hide it from me.

This question came up on a recent Bundy Club watch party. Our buddy Darren jumped on the mic and asked Amanda Bearse and me what the off-camera vibe was actually like during those Married with Children years. Was there real camaraderie? Was there conflict? Did everyone go their own way the second the cameras stopped rolling? Amanda and I had to laugh, because 10 years is a long time to spend with anyone, your spouse included, and we lived in that Bundy living room set longer than most marriages last.

Amanda put it perfectly. Many, many good days, and that’s what matters most. The early days were the rough stretch, because we had no idea anyone was watching. Then the fan base showed up, the show settled in, and the whole set got into a rhythm. After that it was good days, bad days, and the occasional weird day, the same way any other job goes when you actually love who you work with.

Amanda reminded me about the production schedule. We used to shoot three episodes in a row, then take a week off. Those off-weeks were when she started building her second career behind the camera, directing other sitcoms. She had her daughter in 1993, smack in the middle of our run, and somehow she kept the directing work going through all of it. The woman is a machine. Half the reason she became one of the most prolific TV directors of her generation is because she refused to waste a Bundy break.

Me, I was 13 years old when the pilot aired. So when Amanda was talking about her plans for her week off, I jumped in joking that I was at the club thinking about directing. Pondering it deeply. Possibly with a fake ID. Amanda fired back without missing a beat, said I was sneaking in trying to get her on the dance floor. That kind of inside-joke timing only happens with people who have ten years of shared shorthand. Three decades later it still lands.

Here is the part I love telling people. To this day I am still extremely close with the whole cast. Katey Sagal, her husband Kurt, we hang out all the time. Christina Applegate, same thing. And Ed O’Neill, oh man, Ed is a talker. You pick up the phone with Ed, you are on the phone for two hours minimum. My wife sees his name come up on my caller ID and she goes, do not answer that, you are not coming back for the rest of the night. She is never wrong. Katey told me a similar story recently. They will be on the phone for an hour and a half, Ed will finally say well I gotta go, and Katey is like, you called ME.

Brian, who co-hosts the Bundy Club watch parties with me, jumped in during the conversation and said Ed was always a great storyteller. He absolutely was, and he still is. We need to get Ed on a Bundy Club watch party. It will run three hours easy, and every minute will be worth it. The stories that man has, both about the show and about everything that came after, deserve their own series.

That is the honest answer to the camaraderie question. After 10 years filming together and another three decades living life on the other side of it, the Bundy cast is still a family. Most ensemble casts in Hollywood do not get that lucky. We got the right people in the right room at the right time, and we held onto each other.

Tell your wife if the calls get too long, she can always forward one to me 😄
I would be honored to help you out with that.

But honestly, hearing that you all still stay in touch and care for each other after so many years is genuinely touching as a fan ❤️

Ten years in that living room and Dad still couldn’t find the bathroom. Tell your wife if Ed calls, just hand the phone to a houseplant. Same conversation, half the carbon footprint.
