A big thank you to David, Darren, Brian, Richard Gurman, and everyone who joined.
I really enjoyed revisiting It’s a Bundyful Life. My favorite moments were Al’s Christmas poem in Part 1 and the conversation between Al and the guardian angel in Part 2.
Before the Zoom, I watched both episodes again in English and in German. What surprised me most was how closely the German dubbing follows the original. But what impressed me even more was something else: Great dubbing isn’t about finding a voice that sounds exactly like the original actor. It’s about capturing the actor’s energy and performance.
For me, Michael Habeck, Sam Kinison’s German voice actor, did exactly that. He didn’t sound like Sam Kinison, but he perfectly captured his explosive energy, his sudden changes in volume, and his unpredictable personality. That’s why the character feels just as alive in German.
Open Questions:
David asked whether Sam Kinison was well known in Germany at the time.
Honestly, I wasn’t completely sure how to answer. I was probably a little too young to remember how popular he actually was here.
So I’d love to hear from the other German fans in the Club—I know there are a few more of you here. 😊
Do you remember Sam Kinison from before Married… with Children? Was he well known in Germany, or did you discover him through the show?
We also talked about Michael Habeck, Sam Kinison’s German voice actor. He had a very recognizable voice and dubbed many well-known actors and characters. While preparing for the Zoom, I looked through the German Dubbing Database and picked out a few examples:
* Earl Hindman as Wilson in Home Improvement
* Danny DeVito as Louie De Palma in Taxi
* Toby Jones as Dobby in the German versions of the Harry Potter films
* Oliver Hardy in numerous German versions of the Laurel and Hardy films
He also voiced characters such as Chief Wiggum, Dr. Nick, and Groundskeeper Willie in the early seasons of The Simpsons.
While preparing for the Zoom, I also spent some time reading about Sam Kinison on kinison.com.
Learning more about his life—and especially reading the story his brother Bill shared about Sam’s final moments—was incredibly moving and gave me an even greater appreciation for his performance in these episodes.
And finally…
Darren, the game was fantastic! It was such a creative idea, really well prepared, and so much fun to watch.
For me, this is a wonderful format whenever it’s difficult to schedule a guest. Between the episode discussion and the game, the evening never felt like a “backup plan”—it felt like a great event in its own right. I’d be very happy to see more evenings like this in the future.
