So we had David Garrison on the Bundy Breakdown recently, and man, what a conversation. For those who don’t know, David played Steve Rhoades, Marcy’s first husband, for the first four seasons of Married with Children. He was Marcy’s straight-laced, uptight banker husband who could never quite keep up with the chaos next door at the Bundy house. And then one day, Steve was gone, and in walked Jefferson D’Arcy. A lot of fans still wonder what happened.
Here’s the real story. David Garrison is a theater guy through and through. He came from Broadway before he ever set foot on a soundstage, and when his contract came up after Season 4, he made a conscious decision to go back to what he loved. Amanda Bearse put it best when we were talking about the transition between Steve and Jefferson. She said David was “a theater actor, that’s what he left to do. He’s still doing it now.” And I jumped in with, “He’s been on Broadway a billion times.” Because it’s true. The guy has had an incredible career on stage.
What people don’t realize is how different David and Ted McGinley were as performers. Amanda described Garrison as “very detailed,” an actor’s actor. Ted was more “broad stroke,” bigger energy, looser on set. Neither approach was better, they were just totally different, and Amanda had to adjust her whole rhythm with Marcy depending on who she was playing off. That’s something you never think about as a viewer, but for the cast, it was a real shift when David left and Ted came in.
David also told us about how he negotiated with the show’s creators, Ron Leavitt and Michael Moye, toward the end of his run. By Season 4, he knew he was kind of “fifth banana,” his words, behind the Bundy family and Marcy. So when they asked if there was anything else he’d like to do, he said he wanted to direct. And Ron and Michael, being the generous guys they were, gave him that shot. One episode went well, so they gave him another, and that’s what launched his whole directing career. He went on to direct over 30 episodes of the show, plus six years on MAD TV, Reba, and a ton of other series. Pretty amazing second act, all because the MWC team believed in him.
The cool thing about Steve Rhoades is that even though David left as a regular, the character kept coming back. Steve would pop up in later seasons, and every time he did, fans loved it. There was always that dynamic between Steve and Marcy that Jefferson, for all his charm, couldn’t quite replicate. Different energy, different comedy, both great in their own way.
What I respect most is that David walked away from a hit TV show to follow his passion. That takes guts. Married with Children was one of the biggest shows on television, and he said, “I’m going back to Broadway.” And he killed it. He’s been in major productions ever since, including Wicked and Titanic on Broadway. You don’t see that kind of commitment to craft very often in this business.
