What a night it was!
David Garrison, the one and only Steve Rhoades, joined us live for our latest Bundy Breakdown Zoom Watch Party and it was everything we hoped for and more. The tech gremlins tried their best to keep him from joining us at the start (a Bundy Club tradition at this point lol), but once he was in the room it was pure gold from start to finish.
We watched three classic Steve Rhoades episodes: “The Razor’s Edge,” “The Egg and I,” and “Buck Saves the Day.” David shared so many great stories from behind the scenes, from his early days on the show to why he left at the height of its success to pursue his passion for theater. The audience asked fantastic questions and David was generous with his time and insights. It was a real treat for everyone who joined us.
Here is a full recap of the night.
Getting Started and the Tech Adventures
Like a few of our previous watch parties, we kicked things off with the some technical hiccups. David Garrison had a little trouble getting into the Zoom call, which led to plenty of laughs from the regulars in the room. Darren and I were joking that it would not be a Bundy Breakdown if someone was not scrambling to get online. Ed O’Neill had some Zoom issues two weeks before, so it has become something of a running gag at this point.
While we waited for David to join, we chatted with Richard Gurman who has been a regular part of these shows. Richard shared some great stories about the writing process and how the cast and crew worked together. We also had a few laughs about the old days and how the show came together week after week. The energy in the room was high even before our guest arrived.
Once David finally made it in (after a few attempts and some helpful guidance from Brian our tech guru), the real fun began. Everyone gave him a warm welcome and we jumped right into talking about the episodes.
The Episodes We Watched
We picked three standout Steve Rhoades episodes for the night and each one brought something special to the conversation.
The Razor’s Edge (Season 2, Episode 10) This one is a fan favorite for a reason. Steve gets a new look and tries to reinvent himself while dealing with life next door to the Bundys. David talked about how much fun it was to play those moments and how the writing gave him room to really lean into the contrast between Steve’s uptight personality and Al’s chaos. The audience loved hearing his take on the episode and how the cast worked together to make those scenes pop.
The Egg and I (Season 6, Episode 17) This is the episode where Steve comes back after being away and tries to win Marcy back only to discover she has moved on with Jefferson. The Bundys try to turn him in for the FBI reward money. David shared some great memories about filming that one and how wild it was to return to the set after leaving the show. The whole room was cracking up at the absurdity of the plot and how perfectly it captured the Steve and Marcy dynamic even years later.
Buck Saves the Day (Season 4, Episode 3) In this one Al and Bud go camping while Steve deals with some classic Bundy neighbor trouble. David had some funny stories about the filming and how the cast bounced off each other in those scenes. It was a great example of how Steve often found himself pulled into the Bundy orbit whether he wanted to be or not.
Throughout the discussion David was open about his time on the show and what it meant to him. He talked about how the cast felt like family and how the writing gave everyone room to shine. He also shared why he decided to leave after four seasons to go back to theater. It was clear that while he loved his time on Married… with Children, his heart was always pulling him back to the stage.
David’s Stories and Behind the Scenes Insights
One of the best parts of the night was hearing David talk about his career and his experiences on the show. He mentioned how commuting from New York to Los Angeles took its toll after a few years and how he ultimately chose to follow his passion for theater. He spoke about working with Ed O’Neill and Amanda Bearse and how the three of them had great chemistry even when their characters were at each other’s throats. David has had an incredible career beyond Married… with Children. After leaving the show he returned to his first love, the theater, and earned a Tony Award nomination for his work on Broadway. He played the Wizard in Wicked both on Broadway and on the national tour, bringing his signature wit and charm to one of the most beloved roles in modern musical theater. He has also appeared in numerous other stage productions, television shows, and films, proving time and again that he is a true actor’s actor who continues to take on challenging and rewarding roles.
He also shared some fun memories from the writing process and how the cast would sometimes make changes between the afternoon and evening tapings based on what was landing with the audience. It was fascinating to hear how much thought went into every episode and how the writers and actors worked together to make the show as funny as possible.
David even showed off a real park ranger shirt from his own life which tied perfectly into one of Steve’s later storylines. The whole room got a kick out of that and it led to some great laughs about how life sometimes imitates art.
Audience Questions and Interaction
We had some fantastic questions from the audience and David was happy to answer all of them. Here are a few of the highlights:
- Several people asked about his decision to leave the show and what it was like coming back for guest appearances. David explained that while he loved the show he wanted to pursue theater and that leaving at the right time felt like the best choice for him.
- One fan asked about the tap dance scene in an episode where Steve teaches Kelly to dance. David laughed and said that was Ron and Michael’s way of poking fun at his Broadway background.
- Another member asked about working with the rest of the cast and David spoke warmly about how much he enjoyed his time with everyone.
- We also heard some great questions about specific episodes and how certain moments came together on set.
The interaction was lively and everyone seemed to really enjoy the chance to talk directly with David. It was clear from the comments and reactions that Steve Rhoades is still a huge fan favorite and getting to hear from the man who played him was a special treat.
Wrapping Up the Night
As the night wound down we thanked David for joining us and for sharing so many great stories. He was gracious and funny the whole time and it was obvious he had a good time too. We also thanked Richard Gurman for being part of the conversation as always and everyone in the audience for showing up and making the night special.
These watch parties continue to be one of the best parts of the Bundy Club. Getting to watch classic episodes together and then talk about them with the people who made the show is something special. We have more great guests lined up for the coming weeks so keep an eye on the calendar and make sure you are in the watch party group so you do not miss out.
A huge thank you to David Garrison for taking the time to hang with us. It was an honor to have you on the show and we hope to do it again sometime soon.
And as always, thank you to everyone who joins these watch parties. Whether you are a longtime member or brand new, your energy and questions make these nights what they are.

Like a book club… but for Married… with Children episodes!
See you at the next one, Buuuudddyyyys! 🛋️
