Married with Children: How Ike Cost Tom McCleister His Musical Opening Night

Tom McCleister (Ike from Married with Children) telling the Eating Raoul Musical story at the Bundy Club watch party

Listen, when you bring somebody onto Married with Children for one episode, you don’t think you’re rerouting their whole year. You’re filling a chair in the back of the gym at No Ma’am. You hand them the script Monday, you tape it Friday, you say thanks, you go home. That’s the gig.

That’s not what happened with Tom McCleister. Tom played Ike, the giant, gravel-voiced charter member of No Ma’am who showed up in Season 8, Episode 9 (No Ma’am), the episode where the whole crew was sworn in. Tom came in for that one episode. ONE. He told us, sitting at the No Ma’am watch party years later, that he walked in expecting to do the job and walk out.

Here’s the part that made my jaw drop. That Friday he was on our stage was the same Friday Tom was supposed to be opening in Eating Raoul: The Musical. Opening night. The thing he’d been in rehearsal for. The whole live-theater dream sitting on a marquee somewhere with his name on it. He had to call the producers and say: I can’t make the opening. I’m taping a sitcom across town. They threw on his understudy and the show went up without him.

Tom figured fine, one Friday lost, I’ll go back next week. Except next week we called him again. And the week after. And the week after that. By the time the dust settled, Tom had taken 23 Fridays off from Eating Raoul to be Ike. His understudy, whoever that poor guy was, basically inherited the role. Tom never saw his own show.

And we kept calling, because Ike worked. No Ma’am needed a wall of a guy in the back of the room nodding while Jefferson and the rest of us did the talking. By Season 8, Episode 15 (Honey, I Blew Up Myself), Ike was just part of the furniture down at the meetings. He didn’t need a lot of lines. He just needed to be there, looking like the last guy you’d want to argue with about a movie ticket.

He stayed all the way through. By Season 11, Episode 17 (Live Nude Peg), Tom was still right there in the No Ma’am crew, deep in the last season of the show. From a one-shot Friday to the back end of the series. Twenty-three episodes. That’s a real arc for a guy who was supposed to be on stage in a Paul Bartel musical.

What I love about Tom telling this story now is that he’s not bitter. Not even a little. He laughs about it. He says you take the gig in front of you and you trust that the universe knows what it’s doing. Sometimes the universe is telling you that the sitcom was always the gig, and the musical was rehearsal. He carved a recurring TV role out of what was supposed to be a paycheck Friday, and the people watching the No Ma’am episodes thirty years later are still saying his name. The musical opened. The show closed. Ike is still Ike.

This is exactly why these watch parties keep cracking me up. You think you know every story behind the show, and then a Tom McCleister rolls in and tells you the reason a charter No Ma’am member even exists is that a guy was willing to let his understudy go on. We don’t get this stuff in interviews. We get this stuff when the cast is on Zoom with us, with no PR person around, just answering questions from members.

Tom skipped his own opening night 23 times to grunt in the back of NO MA’AM. That understudy made out like a bandit. Somebody send him a fruit basket and Ike’s old chair.
