Most actors walk onto a set and find a nice, cushy bed waiting for them. Dan Tullis Jr., better known to every NO MA’AM sympathizer as Officer Dan on Married… with Children, walked in and found a pile of metal. On a recent Bundy Club Zoom, Dan told us exactly how that went down, and it is about as glamorous as anything else in the Bundy universe.
“I walk in and the prop guy says, ‘Well, here’s the bed,’” Dan remembered. The bed in question was not exactly a Sealy Posturepedic. “It was just a stripped down spring mattress. So it was just springs and then metal and all.” Hollywood magic, Chicago budget.
So who made that bed bounce, wobble and generally misbehave on camera? No hidden crew member, no hydraulic rig, no guy under the set with a broom handle. Dan figured somebody would be helping out and asked whether they were going to shake the bed or anything. The answer from the crew was beautifully cheap: “No, no, no. It just, if you move, it’ll do something.”
Translation: you are the special effect, pal. “And so I had to animate it,” Dan said. When Ed Bell asked, “Oh, that was all you, huh?” Dan confirmed it with the calm pride of a man who has wrestled a box spring and won.
And here is the best part. Out of all his years in uniform on the show, this is the one he picked: “So I did that. That was probably my favorite physical gag.” Not the badge, not the squad car, the angry mattress. Al Bundy would respect a guy who gets the most laughs out of the least furniture.
It is a perfect little window into how the show got made: a great performer, a tiny prop budget and a cast that could squeeze comedy out of literally anything, including a bed that looked like it was rescued from behind a shoe store dumpster.
